What makes espresso coffee beans special?

Espresso coffee beans differ from filter coffee in three ways.

The roasting is darker. This provides lower acidity and more body. Filter coffee is roasted lighter to highlight fruity notes. Espresso must withstand pressure and temperature without becoming sharp.

Espresso shot from The Artisan
Perfectly extracted espresso requires the right beans and precise grinding.

The blend is often different. Many espresso blends combine multiple origins to create balance. Brazilian beans provide chocolate and nut. Ethiopian beans add floral and citrus. A good blend delivers the same taste cup after cup.

Freshness means everything. Espresso extracts oils and aromas intensely. Old beans give flat taste. We roast to order because three weeks can make the difference between excellent and mediocre espresso.

Tip

Only buy what you use in 2-3 weeks. Fresh beans develop crema better and give cleaner taste. With a coffee subscription you always get freshly roasted beans delivered on time.

Single-origin vs. espresso blends

You choose between two directions.

Single-origin espresso comes from one country or a specific farm. It provides character. An Ethiopian Yirgacheffe tastes different from a Colombian Huila. You experience the terroir directly. The downside is variation between harvest years. Taste can shift.

Espresso blends combine 2-4 origins. This provides stability. A good blend tastes the same month after month. We adjust the proportions if a component changes. Blends are easier to work with at home because they forgive small mistakes in extraction.

Most people start with a blend. Once you know your machine, single-origin can open new dimensions.

Roast level and flavor profile

Espresso tolerates darker roasts than filter coffee.

Light roast espresso preserves acidity. It requires precise extraction. Too short gives sour taste. Too long gives bitterness. Light roasts suit modern machines with precise temperature control.

Medium roast is the safest route. The balance between acidity and body is forgiving. Most home machines handle this roast well. The taste becomes chocolate, nut and caramel with moderate acidity.

Dark roast gives strong body and low acidity. This was the standard in Italy. Dark roasts mask bean quality. Good beans roasted too dark lose their character. But for milk drinks it works fine because the body cuts through.

Latte art – milk drinks with espresso
Medium to dark roast gives body and crema that cut through milk.

We recommend medium for most. It provides flexibility.

How to choose your first espresso coffee beans

Start with your equipment.

Do you have a semi-automatic machine with pressure gauge? Choose a medium roast blend. It gives error margin while you learn dosing and tamping.

Do you have a super-automatic machine? Choose medium to medium-dark. Built-in grinders rarely handle very light roasts optimally.

Do you have a manual lever machine? You can handle single-origin light roast. But still start with a blend to learn the machine's temperature and pressure.

Do you mostly drink milk drinks? Choose blends with higher proportion of South American beans. They provide chocolate-nut profiles that complement milk.

Do you drink black espresso? Single-origin medium roast gives most complexity. Try our DA Natural (Anaerobic Fermentation) for a fruity and complex profile, or DA Natural (Long Fermented) for even more depth and wine-like notes.

Warning

Never buy pre-ground beans for espresso. They oxidize quickly after grinding. Flavor disappears within days. Invest in a grinder.

Storage and shelf life

Espresso beans are sensitive.

Light breaks down oils. Store in opaque container.

Air oxidizes aromas. Use airtight jar or valve bags.

Moisture destroys structure. Keep beans dry.

Heat accelerates decay. Store at room temperature.

Don't freeze espresso beans unless you portion them first. Repeated thawing damages cell structure. Condensation enters when you open the bag.

Roasted coffee beans – store airtight and dark
Fresh beans should be stored airtight and protected from light to preserve aroma.

Optimal taste comes 5-14 days after roasting. The first days the beans release CO2. This can give acidic shot. After three weeks oils begin to oxidize. Taste flattens.

We roast Monday and Thursday. You receive the beans 2-6 days after roasting. That's perfect timing.

Good to know

Want always-fresh beans ready? With our coffee subscription you receive freshly roasted beans automatically every 2nd, 3rd or 4th week. You choose the coffee and interval yourself.

Price and quality

Good espresso beans cost 70-150 kr. per 250g.

Under 70 kr: Often commercial blends with low score and dark roast. Functional but without complexity.

70-100 kr: Specialty-grade blends or single-origin. Good balance between price and quality. Most people find their favorite here.

Over 100 kr: Competition-grade single-origin or micro-lots. For enthusiasts chasing unique profiles.

Price reflects three things: bean quality (SCA score), processing method and traceability. A washed Ethiopian from a named farm costs more than an anonymous Brazilian blend.

But expensive coffee requires precise equipment. A 120 kr. single-origin gets wasted on an unstable machine with poor temperature.

Match the coffee to your setup. An 85 kr. blend on a good machine beats a 130 kr. single-origin on mediocre equipment. Do you also drink decaf espresso? Try our Chevere Decaf Coffee – a Colombian single-origin processed with the Swiss Water method for full flavor without caffeine.

Frequently asked questions about espresso

Can I use espresso beans for filter coffee?

Yes, but the result will be different. Espresso beans are roasted darker than filter beans. This gives lower acidity and more bitterness in the filter pot. The taste becomes heavier. If you only have espresso beans you can use them, but we recommend buying dedicated filter beans for better balance.

How long do espresso beans last?

Optimal taste lasts 2-3 weeks after roasting if beans are stored airtight and dark. After a month the aromas begin to disappear. Technically you can use the beans for 2-3 months, but espresso extracts so intensely that even small quality losses are noticeable.

What is the difference between arabica and robusta in espresso?

Arabica provides complex flavor nuances and lower caffeine. Robusta gives more crema, stronger body and higher caffeine. Many Italian blends use 10-20% robusta for extra crema and body. We use 100% arabica because we prioritize flavor clarity.

Should I buy whole beans or ground coffee?

Always whole beans for espresso. Ground coffee loses aroma within hours. Espresso requires precise grind size tailored to your machine. It's impossible to hit it right with pre-ground beans. Invest in a grinder.

Why does single-origin cost more than blends?

Single-origin comes from one specific farm or region. This requires direct trade relationships and traceability. Farmers receive higher price for high quality. Blends can use beans from multiple sources and adjust composition based on availability. This lowers the price.

What grind size should I use for espresso?

Fine grind, similar to table salt consistency. The exact setting depends on your machine and beans. Start fine and adjust coarser if extraction is too slow (over 30 seconds). Adjust finer if too fast (under 20 seconds). Target 25 seconds for a double shot.
